GFA announce sanctions after Gib United vs St Joseph’s racism incident

St Joseph’s midfielder Fran Mejias has been handed a six-match ban from all football related activity after being found guilty of racially abusing Gibraltar United midfielder Yalany Baio last month.

Baio, who was sent off after the incident in their 1-0 win, has also been given a two match ban for his involvement in the brawl that occurred after the incident, while members of both teams, as well as the clubs themselves, have been given punishments ranging from monetary fines to match suspensions. These include St Joseph’s Head Coach Raul Procopio, his assistant, Guillermo Ramon Maqueda Castro, and Gib United Team Delegate Francis Huart.

Find below a list of the charges and respective outcomes from the investigation into the match that took place on February 17th.

Gibraltar Utd FC

1. Team Misconduct – Guilty. Fined £500.

2. Being involved in brawl – Guilty. No Separate Penalty.

3. Unidentified club members involved in brawl – Guilty. No Separate Penalty.

Francis Huart – Gibraltar United Team Delegate

Being involved in brawl – Guilty. Fined £250.

Yalani Baio – Gibraltar United Player

1.Being Involved in Brawl – Guilty. 2 match suspension from all GFA football related activity.

2.Offensive Behaviour – Guilty. No Separate Penalty.

St. Josephs FC

1.Team Misconduct – Guilty. £500 Fine.

2.Taking part in brawl – Guilty. No Separate Penalty.

3.Unidentified club member involved in brawl – Guilty. No Separate Penalty.

Raul Procopio – St Joseph’s FC Head Coach

1. Assault on an opponent – Guilty. 2 match suspension from all GFA football related activity.

2. Being involved in brawl – Guilty. £250 Fine.

3. Offensive behaviour – Not Guilty.

Guillermo Ramon Maqueda Castro – St Joseph’s FC Assistant Coach

1.Being involved in brawl – Guilty. £250 Fine.

2.Offensive behaviour – Not Guilty.

Francisco Mejias Noya – St Joseph’s FC Player

1. Assault on an opponent – Not Guilty.

2. Being involved in brawl – Guilty. No Separate Penalty.

3. Offensive behaviour. Not Guilty.

4. Racism. Guilty. 6 match suspension from all football related activity.
