Premier Division awards announced

As the Premier Division season drew to a close nearly two months ago, Adam Roberts & Daniel Griffin dished out a few accolades.

The Football Gibraltar duo chose their top player and manager from the 2016/17 Premier Division season, as well as picking their ultimate XI from the campaign.

We also gave a chance for the fans to vote which is posted below.

Player of the Season

Adam’s pick: Kike (Europa)

Joining from Coria FC and only being 22/23 years old, many expected Kike to come and go within a season. Taking over from the experienced Pedro Carrion, Kike’s first game was against Lincoln in the Pepe Reyes where he scored both goals in their 2-0 win, his debut was terrific and would go on to score 30+ goals in all competitions. A special player.

Dan’s pick: Kike (Europa)

This one was an easy choice. Filling Pedro Carrion’s shoes seemed an enviable task at best, but Kike did more than just that. At 23, he can only improve as well; if Europa keep hold of the Spanish striker and he keeps his form from last season then they have a very good chance of retaining their title.

Manager of the Season

Adam’s pick: Albert Parody (Lynx)

Sitting bottom at Christmas and the poor playing poorly, many expected Lynx to be battling at the bottom of the table but some clever transfer dealings from Albert made a major impact in his team’s second half of the season performance. Players like Mosquera, Mitchell & O’Dwyer got the team ticking and with Raul Segura and Lynx would go on to pick up some important results and great performances.

Dan’s pick: Juanjo Gallardo (Europa)

The man who oversaw the end of Lincoln’s dominance was an easy choice for manager of the season. Winning the treble for Europa represented a better season than anyone could have imagined, and Juanjo was instrumental in setting up his side to win so many key games throughout the domestic season. His task next year is maintaining that level of performance, given expectations will have risen massively after their excellent campaign last season.

Young Player of the Season

Adam’s pick: Bernardo Lopes (Lincoln Red Imps)

Lincoln can count themselves lucky they have a player with the calibre of Bernardo Lopes on their books, a real gem. Young, tall and pacey, he has been the Imps’ best player all season and you’d expect him to go onto bigger and better things in the future.

Dan’s pick: Bernardo Lopes (Lincoln Red Imps)

An integral cog in the defence that conceded the least goals last season, Bernardo played a somewhat unsung role for the Red Imps last season. The former Benfica youth product is definitely one to keep an eye out for, and as an established member of the Lincoln team he’ll be very vital as Lincoln look to reclaim their place at the top of Gibraltar football.

Team of the Season

Adam’s XI: Raul Navas; Ivan Lobato, Bernardo Lopes, Alberto Merino, Joseph Chipolina; Liam Walker, Javier Lopez, Hugo Colace, Salvador Carrasco; Kike, Pibe.

Dan’s XI: Raul Navas; Ibrahim Ayew, Bernardo Lopes, Alberto Merino, Joseph Chipolina; Liam Walker, Ivan Moya, Hugo Colace, Salvador Carrasco; Kike, John Paul Duarte.
