Gibraltar United have completed the signings of Michael Negrette & Cecil Prescott.
Both youngsters joined St Joseph’s two seasons ago with their former manager Alfonso Cortijo giving them a taste of Premier football at the age of 16 years old. We asked Negrette to sum up his time at the club, “It’s been amazing, from first signing with St Joseph’s then getting minutes in Premier which I thought I’d never get. I have improved a lot as I have been training with good players but coming to the end it gradually got worse as I wasn’t playing much.”
While St Joseph’s were preparing for their Europa League campaign, reports broke out that players were being told they would no longer be at the club via the social media app “Whatsapp”. We asked Cecil if this was true, “Yes it is certainly true and I believe it is very unprofessional from the club considering they have qualified for a European tournament. I feel they should have treated their players with a bit more respect.”
The Gibraltar U21 internationals are the first signings under the Michel Salgado era. We asked Michael how it feels to have joined GIbraltar United, “It’s great to be playing at a club which has previously played with all Gibraltarians, it shows that they take care of their young locals and make them into first team players.”
Cecil returns to Gibraltar United, a team he joined when he was just seven years old. We asked him how it feels to be back, “It feels magnificent because I’ve always wanted to return to this club one day and it’s finally come true.”
Lastly the youngsters gave us their ambitions for the future with both players saying, “We would like to come up the ranks and represent Gibraltar at senior level as it’s an honour to play for your country.”
