Kike hands Europa advantage in UCL tie

Europa will take a narrow lead to Estádio Algarve after beating The New Saints 2-1 in the first leg of their Champions League first round tie.

Alex Quillo got on the end of a Kike cutback to fire Europa in the lead with only eight minutes played much to the surprise of those watching and even some of the TNS players. Shortly after a vital clearance from Martin Belfortti prevented Scott Quigley from running through on goal after latching onto a poor backpass from Alberto Merino.

TNS improved as the game went on and just before the break equalised thanks to a fabulous finish from Quigley who was proving to be quite a handful for the Europa defenders. The second half got underway with the Welsh side on the front-foot but solid defending from Europa made sure that keeper Javi Munoz didn’t have too much to do.

78 minutes gone and Europa regained the lead, a superb run from Liam Walker found Kike who curled his effort past a helpless Paul Harrison. The Greens were able to hold on and secure a famous win which puts them in good stead for their second leg next Tuesday.
