Kike the star as Europa win Gibtelecom Rock Cup

Kike scored twice as Europa beat Lincoln Red Imps 3-0 in the Gibtelecom Rock Cup final to complete the treble.

Lincoln Red Imps found themselves down to ten men in the first fifteen minutes as a poor back-pass from Jean Carlos Garcia found Kike through on goal. The striker was brought down by Bernardo Lopes and referee Jason Barcelo had no other option but to send the Portuguese off.

Shortly after Europa broke the deadlock as Liam Walker delivered a corner which found the unmarked Alex Quillo who headed the ball past Raul Navas from close range. Neither team threatened to score after the goal and went into the break with Europa leading 1-0.

Europa started the second half the better side and brought out an unbelievable reaction save to keep out Martin Belfortti’s close range header. In the 55th minute Europa doubled their lead, Mustapha Yahaya latched onto a through ball from Ibrahim Ayew and cut it back for Kike to fire past Navas.

Kike got his second and Europa’s third just ten minutes later as his sweetly struck shot from the edge of the box found the top corner – his 36th goal in all competitions. Two minutes later Europa nearly made it 4-0 but Walker’s shot was cleared off the line by Roy Chipolina.

Lincoln’s first real chance of the game came about in the 78th minute when Tulio Etchemaite’s long range shot had Munoz beat, however the ball struck the post. A few minutes later things got heated as Etchemaite flew into a challenge on Ivan Moya and while the midfielder was on the ground, the Imps striker slapped him. Once the teams were seperated, Jason Barcelo dished out red cards to Etchemaite and also Karim Pinero who was on the Europa bench.

In added time Lincoln went down to 8 men as half-time substitute Ryan Casciaro was sent off for a second bookable offence. The Greens saw out the final few minutes and walked away with the win & the Gibtelecom Rock Cup to round off what has been an excellent season for them. For Lincoln, a trophiless season leaves many questions that need to be answered in the coming months.
