A final day victory over Leo secured Gib Phoenix the Second Division shield, we take a look at how they steam-rolled their way to the double.
The season didn’t start off quite as Phoenix would have expected, problems with the HGP rule saw them forfeit their two opening games against Hound Dogs & Brunos Magpies. With the club only one game away from being pulled out the league, Phoenix dug deep into their pockets and signed former Gibraltar United duo David Gallardo & Duane Robba.
From then on Phoenix went from strength to strength, rarely ever tested in the league as they went on a 14-match unbeaten streak. Spearheading the attack was former Marbella FC striker Luisma Casas Dominguez & former Glacis & Mons Calpe striker German Cortes Narvaez who scored a combined 55 goals this season, astonishing stuff.
In the middle of May, Phoenix claimed The Chestertons Cup when they beat College 1975 2-0 in the final thanks to a brace from German Cortes Narvaez. Their only real defeat came in the semi-final of the Gibtelecom Rock Cup when they lost 2-0 to Europa FC who would go on to win the Cup.
The pressure of Premier football comes with promotion, a massive influx of money will need to be invested if Phoenix want to be taken seriously. The main focus will be keeping hold of the players which have done so well this season and also improving from their last time out in 2013–14 when they went the whole season without winning a game.
