The semi-finals of the Gibtelecom Rock Cup get underway tonight, with the top 3 teams in the Premier joined by Gib Phoenix who are likely to become champions of the second division. Football Gibraltar preview the two big games as we get closer to finding out who will make the final this year:
Lincoln vs St Josephs – Tuesday 25th April 19:30
In a battle between first and third in the league this season, Lincoln will look to make the finals as is expected of the current champions, but know St Joseph’s provide a stern test. Saints look likely to take the third European spot this season, sitting 10 points clear of Glacis in the league and knowing that if they, Europa or Lincoln win the cup, Saints get the European spot.
Lincoln have the bonus of a week rest between this fixture and their next league match, against Manchester, so we’d expect them to go full strength tonight despite their league commitments. With St Joseph’s almost certain to finish third, we’d trust them to go all out on the cup in the hope of winning silverware this season. All this promises a great match-up at the Victoria this evening.
Prediction: Lincoln 2-2 St Joseph’s (Lincoln win on penalties)
Gib Phoenix vs Europa – Wednesday 26th April 19:30
Gib Phoenix get a taste of life against the big boys when they face Europa tomorrow in the other semi-final, with the likely second division champions already taking a Premier scalp in Lions this season. Should they go up, Phoenix will no doubt do better in the Premier next season than their last outing there, but Europa could prove a step too far for them.
However, Europa face a tough league game against St Joseph’s on Saturday, and as a result may be tempted to rest a few of their star players against Phoenix, which may make the contest more even than it may appear on paper. Special focus should go onto Luis Casas Dominguez, with many believing the Phoenix striker is actually good enough for Premier football on the Rock.
Gib Phoenix 1-3 Europa
