Europa v Lincoln: Preview

League leaders Europa take on rivals Lincoln Red Imps at 20:30 with winner looking favourite to win the Premier Division title.

For both teams, flying high in the Premier Division, this crucial match can be a title decider for either team. A late Jared Buhagiar equalised for Glacis held Lincoln to a 3-3 draw last weekend and Europa took full advantage of their slip up by winning 4-0 against Manchester 62 to move two points clear at the top.

This season has arguably been the closest it has ever been and with only six games remaining we expect the title race to go down to the final day. Today’s game is very important but with both teams still to play Mons Calpe & St Joseph’s, there is still a chance of more points being dropped.

Europa manager Juanjo Gallardo and his technical staff have sat down with each other over the last few days/weeks and reviewed their 3-1 defeat to Lincoln in early January and seen where they have gone wrong. When midfielder Mustapha Yahaya and Ivan Moya have been in the central of midfield, Europa have played their best football and look a much better unit.

The creativity of Alex Quillo is something which Europa might lack but with such a good understanding between Liam Walker & Kike, maybe Juanjo can afford to bench the Spanish midfielder. Full-back Jesus Toscano is someone who missed out in their defeat to Lincoln and will be hoping to be fit for today’s game.

It’s been a tough season for Lincoln – a tiring Champions League campaign followed by World Cup Qualifiers has left the majority of a team without a well rested break compared to other teams. Two draws and some unconvincing performances over the last few weeks has raised some questions of Lincoln. Is the pressure getting to them?

One of the big talking points has been Lincoln’s new formation. The Imps have the players for it but are they getting the most out of their players? Jean Carlos Garcia is one player who has seen his game improve majorly, scoring five goals this season while one player who it isn’t working out for is Joseph Chipolina. Joseph is one of the best players in league and has shown it over the last few seasons but this campaign we haven’t been speaking about him as much as we’re used too.

Even though the Gibraltarian international has bagged 13 goals this season, manager Julio Ribas has played him in a central midfield role and at times behind the striker in some games which hasn’t quite worked out for him.

We expect today’s game to be a heated encounter with both teams doing what they need to get the result which will benefit them the most. You can follow live updates on our twitter account @FGScoreCentre.
