Jose Antonio ‘Chico Rubio’ Quiros was Phoenix’s hero as he struck in the final minute to fire them to a 1-0 Chestertons Cup semi-final victory over Magpies.
The first half was a tight contest, Phoenix edging it on possession but not causing the Magpies defence any problems. With about ten minutes of the half remaining Phoenix had a chance to take the lead, Luisma Casas skipped past two players, ran into the box and cut the ball back to Chico Rubio whose shot was excellently saved by David Martin.
Both teams went into the break level at 0-0. Phoenix started the second half on the front foot and nearly took the lead but Guillermo Torrejon’s shot from outside the box struck the post. Shortly after Magpies had a chance of their own, highly rated striker Luke Busumbru skipped past two players and fired a shot towards goal which was saved by Ignacio Gomez.
Just after the hour mark Magpies were down to 10 men as midfielder Antonio Huercano picked up two yellows in about a minute of each other and was sent off. Luckily for the Spaniard the referee missed his alleged slap on Phoenix midfielder Jonathan Tomillero just before receiving his first caution.
In added time Phoenix were a corner which the Magpies defence cleared the ball to the unmarked Chico Rubio who was waiting on the edge of the box and fired the ball into the bottom corner. The game restarted and referee Patrick Canepa blew the final whistle and Phoenix will now face College 1975 or FC Boca in the final.
