The Chestertons Cup gets underway today with nine Second Division teams all in with a chance of walking away with silverware.
The Gibraltar FA announced earlier this month that it had reached an agreement with Chestertons Gibraltar to become the new title sponsor of the Second Division Cup for 2017, with the competition renamed ‘The Chestertons Cup’. The competition will see the Second Division teams split into three groups, with the winners of each group and the best placed runner up progressing into semi-final stage.
The opening game comes from Group A with FC Hound Dogs taking on College 1975 today at 18:30 while Olympique aren’t in action until the 26th March. Looking at how the table stands, College are favourites to win the group.
All eyes will be on Group B which consists of Cannons, Bruno’s Magpies & FC Boca. With Phoenix on the verge of winning the title, Magpies will be shifting their attention to the Cup but they have struggled against their opponents, drawing three and winning one so winning the group will be no walk in the park.
Gib Phoenix are strong favourites to win the competition and can still complete the treble following their Gibtelecom Rock Cup win over Lions last weekend and are only two wins away from clinching the Second Division title. Leo could see this group as a chance to progress to the semi-final as the best placed runner up seeing as they are up against Angels, who they have beat comfortably this season.
