Gibraltar started the UEFA Futsal Euro 2018 qualifying campaign with an 8-1 loss against Montenegro at the Tercentenary Sports Hall tonight.
Naoufal El Andaloussi scored for Gibraltar, but in truth the Balkan nation, who beat Gibraltar 10-2 back in 2013, were well worth their victory on the court.
Gibraltar could and should have added a couple more goals to their tally, and for spells matched their more experienced, stronger opponents, but in the end the near capacity crowd in the sports hall only saw the one home goal, with El Andaloussi heading over Montenegrin keeper Dragoljub Despotovic to make the score 4-1. Despite the scoreline, there were a number of promising performances including that of goalkeeper Denzel Navarro who made a host of top saves. The 22-year old Rock 54 keeper looks set to have a bright future with the national team is today is anything to go by.
Tomorrow sees Montenegro take on the other team in Group G, Sweden, with the latter in attendance studying their two opponents in the next two days – Gibraltar next play on Monday evening vs Sweden; both games are 7pm kick offs.
Tickets are £5 and can be bought at the sports hall, with proceeds going to local charities.
