Arguably the most eye-catching signing of the summer was Liam Walker moving from Lincoln to Europa after the successful Champions League campaign where he shone in not only Gibraltar, but also Tallinn and Glasgow.
The exciting midfielder, who made the news with his glorious goal for Gibraltar against Greece earlier this month, will have all eyes on him tonight as the two teams take to the pitch for the Pepe Reyes Cup, and as Walker explains, the move from Lincoln to Europa was perhaps not as hard as some may have expected.
“Well it has been 2 good years at Lincoln like you said making history, but my contract was up at the end of the season and the new contract offered just wasn’t good enough. I was only offered a 1 year deal and a considerable pay cut so I had no choice really.”
Walker would have been the most in-demand free agent on the Rock, but when Europa came calling, the decision was not too hard to make.
“To be totally honest Europa had shown a big interest and no disrespect to any other club but I feel at the moment they are the most professional club and it is growing as a club, and I feel the way the team plays it will make me improve more as a player so now its a new challenge for me to try and now make history with Europa FC.”
Since joining a Europa side who have strengthened in numerous areas over the summer, Walker speaks positively of the atmosphere with his new team-mates.
“Life is good, since the first day I have been received and treated like everyone else. The pre season training has been hard work but very good and run perfectly by the technical team and now we cant wait for Sundays match vs Lincoln. “
It is fair to say many will see the former Lincoln midfielder as Europa’s best chance of winning tonight, especially given his knowledge of the current Red Imps side. As expected, Walker will put in the same levels of high performance tonight as in any other game for any other team.
“Well all I can say is I will give it my all as I have done with every team I have played for in the past and if what I do out on that pitch helps the team to victory then all the better.”
With the battle between Europa and Lincoln for supremacy on the Rock beginning for another season, today is the first opportunity to gain bragging rights on the pitch and set the tone for another exciting season ahead. There’s only one thing on Walker’s mind though ahead of tonight’s big fixture.
“Obviously a win is all we have on our minds,to go out on Sunday and win the first title of the season, but no matter what happens we are mentally strong to have success this season.”
Football Gibraltar would like to thank Liam Walker for taking the time to be interviewed ahead of tonight’s big game. The Pepe Reyes Cup final between Lincoln and Europa kicks off at 7pm tonight and live coverage can be found on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
