Lincoln Red Imps were crowned champions of the Women’s Rock Cup after beating Lions 1-0 thanks to Tiffany Viagas’ stunning strike.
Lions started the stronger side and had the ball in the back of the net early on but was ruled out for offside. Lions continued to pressure, Kathryn Rocca played the ball to Amanda Gingell whose shot was saved by Cristina Carrasco.
Lincoln came battling back, Shania Robba latched onto a through ball, ran through on goal and lobbed the on-rushing Kyrelle Revagliatte but her effort hit the post. Shania Robba had another attempt on goal a few minutes later, Revagliatte produced a great save to keep it out.
Just before half-time Lions nearly took the lead, Keshia Doody latched onto a through ball, skipped past her marker and drilled a shot towards goal which hit the post. Shortly after the referee blew for half-time with the score at 0-0.
Two minutes into the second half and Lincoln took the lead, Tiffany Viagas’ tried her luck from range, the ball flew over Revagliatte, hit the crossbar and bounced over the line. Lions had a great chance to equalise but Carrasco produced a great save to keep out Lorena Garcia’s attempt on goal.
Near the end Lincoln nearly made it 2-0, Jamie-Lee Benyunes’ shot beat Revagliatte but was excellently cleared off the line by Maria Belen Torres Ruiz. Lions had a fantastic chance to equalise with a few minutes remaining, Amanda Gingell whipped in a cross which found Kayleigh Ferro who blasted the ball over the bar.
Lincoln held on and secured a hard fought victory in what was a great game.
