Lynx were crowned champions of the Futsal 1st Division by beating St Joseph’s Spark Energy 8-2 in the playoff final and will compete in the UEFA Futsal Cup for a second consecutive time.
Two minutes into the first half and Lynx took the lead, Francisco Heredia Vargas found Ruben Fernandez Ruiz who fired the ball past Mark Moxham from close range. Six minutes later St Joseph’s equalised, Jesus Sanchez Cana capitalised on a defensive error and lobbed the on-rushing Jose Romero.
St Joseph’s started to dominate the game and made it 2-1, Mark Moxham blasted the ball forward which hit the crossbar, the ball rebounded off Jose Romero and rolled into the net. Saints nearly made it 3-1 just before the break but Tyson Ruiz’s close range shot was excellently saved by Romero. Referee blew for half-time with St Joseph’s leading 2-1.
Three minutes into the second half and Lynx equalised, captain Christian Sanchez volleyed the ball into the top corner from a tight angle, absolute stunner! Lynx started to take control of the game and made it 3-2, Ruben Fernandez Ruiz whipped in a cross which Lee Buhagiar fired into his own net.
26 minutes in and Lynx made it 4-2, Ruben Fernandez Ruiz laid the ball off to Ian Rodriguez who smashed the ball past Moxham. St Joseph’s nearly pulled a goal back but Jose Machado Ruiz’s shot was saved by Romero.
Lynx made it 4-2 six minutes later, Ruben Fernandez Ruiz skipped past his marker and slotted the ball past Moxham. Less than a minute later it was 5-2, a fast counter-attack saw Ian Rodriguez one-on-one with the keeper and drilled the ball into the back of the net.
Lynx made it 7-2 with four minutes to go, Jose Bernal Cabeza latched onto a through ball from Francisco Heredia and slotted the ball past Moxham. Less than a minute later it was 8-2, Bernal skipped past Muscat and fired the ball past the keeper.
Lynx held on for the last few minutes and secured a deserved win.
