Europa Point v Brunos Magpies – The key battles

Holders Europa Point will be strong favourites when they take on Brunos Magpies in the Second Division Cup final at the Victoria Stadium today.

Europa Point are currently undefeated and top of the Second Division but that will count for little today.

Here we pick out three of the key individual battles that could go a long way to deciding the outcome of the Second Division Cup final.

Christian Nuñez v Michael Macias

Since arriving in January, Europa Point striker Christian Nunez has been deadly in front of goal scoring 16 goals in all competitions. Nunez is pacey, has bags of skill and is already attracting attention by Premier teams in such a short space of time in Gibraltar. He will definitely be someone who Magpies need to stop if they hope to win today.

Macias has been an absolute rock for Magpies this season though. His pace, strength and awareness has made easy work of most strikers in the Second Division and he will need to be on the top of his game as he faces up against the league’s best striker.

Alexis Sanchez v Nana Fiifi Asare Marfo

Alexis Sanchez has picked up from where he left off last season and has been outstanding. After missing a few months of this season the attacking midfielder currently has 10 goals in all competitions and has been a joy to watch. Whether Europa Point get promoted or not this season is yet to be seen but we are sure that Sanchez will be playing Premier football next season.

The departure of English trio Elsahib, Hattabi and Totesaut left Magpies with a massive problem but after some hard work during the January transfer window, Magpies have replaced the trio with some quality players in Placid, Marfo and Dembele. While Placid and Dembele are attacking players, Marfo sits in a central defensive midfielder role and stops the majority of attacks on the Magpies goal, while he also has a great long range shot.

Jose Arana Trivino v Max Bothen

Arguably the Second Division’s best defender, Jose ‘Chema’ Arana Trivino is Europa Point’s captain and is a cracking player. The former Algeciras defender has been solid all season and will hope he can continue his good form into tomorrow’s big game and for the rest of the season as they search for promotion.

Chema has the pace but Bothen has the power, something which Second Division defenders have struggled with all season. Bothen has 12 goals in all competitions and will be hoping to create havoc today; that is if wingers Reece Placid and Nick Dembele are allowed to rule the wings.

Europa Point have only lost one game in all competitions and after beating Magpies twice this season already, they will be quietly confident going into today’s game.
