Rock Cup 15/16: Semi-final preview

Gibraltar’s version of the “FA Cup”, the Rock Cup, returns today as Lincoln Red Imps take on Manchester 62 in an old firm derby followed by Europa versus Lions

Lincoln Red Imps vs Manchester 62 – 16:30 Kick-Off.

The reigning champions Lincoln come into this game in superb form; they are currently one win away from retaining the league and their cup form is decent too, scoring nine goals and conceding one in two games. Ribas has a selection headache on his hands with Kyle Casciaro, George Cabrera, Guido Abayian and Lee Casciaro all fully fit. Abayian was the player to miss out in Lincoln’s 3-0 win over St Joseph’s last Sunday and will most probably sit out again.

For Mancheser 62, since the turn of the year the Red Devils have gone from strength to strength. Kiko Prieto has sussed out the problem that let his side down early on in the season and has worked tremendously hard since taking over. The defensive pairing of Jack Sergeant and Aaron Payas have been solid, the signing of Fran Mejias has improved the side influentially and Cristian Toncheff looks back to his best with 16 goals this season.

Prediction: Lincoln Red Imps (3-1 win)

Europa vs Lions – 19:30 Kick-off.

Going by Gibraltar FA’s ruling, the winner of the Rock Cup will go to the Europa League so Europa need to make sure they beat Lions if not they will miss out on a European spot, if Lincoln also fail to retain their trophy. If Lincoln win the Rock Cup then Europa will go into Europe however they do in this game. Following their 13 minute game against Angels on Monday, the Carrasco’s should not have any injury problem apart from Jesus Negrillo.

Lions come into the game on the back of a 6-3 win over Glacis, the first win under the guidance of Rafa Bado and Dave Wilson. Lions have been hampered by injuries this season and will need a full strength side for their encounter against a very strong Europa. Lions tactics will need to be spot on, as a defensive approach combined with counter attacking play will be their only chance of getting any type of result.

Conclusion: (Europa 2-0)
