A brace from Fernando Cuesta secured Gib Phoenix a 3-1 victory over Leo to book themselves a place in the semi-finals of the Second Division Cup.
Gib Phoenix started the first half the better side and quickly took control of the game, Fernando Cuesta skipped past Fernando Sanchez and ran through on goal, his effort was saved by Charles Santos. Just before half-time Phoenix nearly took the lead but a great defensive block from Francisco Javier Moreno prevented Fernando Cuesta from getting a clear shot on goal.
Leo improved majorly in the second half and nearly took the lead within the first three minutes, Ivan Clavijo capitalised on a poor back-pass from Jonatan Benavente and lobbed his effort over Tinajero and just wide of the post. Four minutes later Phoenix took the lead, Fernando Cuesta skipped past two Leo defenders and slotted his effort past Santos.
Shortly after Phoenix were on the attack again, Cuesta played the ball to Ismael Cordoba on the edge of the area, his attempt on goal was excellently saved by Charles Santos. Ten minutes later Leo were awarded a penalty as Jonatan Benavente brought down Ivan Clavijo in the box. Juan Carlo Guiterrez stepped up and coolly slotted his effort into the bottom corner.
Phoenix regained the lead in the 77nd minute, a fantastic solo run from Ismael Cordoba saw him run through on goal and slot his effort past the on-rushing Charles Santos. Three minutes later Leo were down to 10 men as defender David Rodriguez Garcia was sent off for a second bookable offence.
With the last kick of the game Phoenix put the game to bed, Cordoba’s cross found Fernando Cuesta unmarked in the middle who drilled his effort into the back of the net and secured his side a 3-1 victory and sends them into the next round of the Second Division Cup where they will take on Second Division leader Europa Point.
