Angels too strong for Gib Phoenix

Second half goals from Daniel Rodriguez, Jonathan Rojas, Christian Mena & Fernando Lima de Aguiar secured Angels a convincing 4-0 win over Gib Phoenix which sees them progress into the next round of the Rock Cup.

Angels nearly took the lead in the first five minutes, Jose Carlos Fernandez’s free-kick struck the post and went out for a goal-kick. Twenty minutes later Phoenix came battling back, Fernando Cuesta skipped past two players and went one-on-one, his shot was excellently saved by Welerson Ribeiro Dias. 

Phoenix were able to hold on and go into the break on level terms. The second half got underway with Phoenix making a substitution, defender Jose Francisco Dominguez was replaced by winger Jose Luis Lopez. Four minutes after the change Angels took the lead, Silveira’s through ball found Daniel Rodriguez who slotted his effort past the on-rushing Phoenix keeper.

Minutes later Angels were on the attack again, Boris Sanchez skipped past Jamie Linares and whipped in a cross which found Christian Mena whose shot was saved by Jose Antonio Correro. The resulting corner was delivered and found Jonathan Rojas who smashed his effort past Correro to make it 2-0 for Angels.

Six minutes later Angels made it 3-0, Daniel Rodriguez played the ball to Boris Sanchez on the wing, his low cross found Christian Mena who drilled his shot past Correro. Both sides made a series of changes to try and change the game but it was Angels who extended their lead, Fernando Lima de Aguiar’s long range shot flew past Correro and into the bottom corner to make it 4-0.

Just before full-time Phoenix had a glorious chance to pull a goal back but Adan Sanchez Lobato’s volleyed effort was excellently saved by Welerson Ribeiro Dias. Angels were able to hold on and secure a comfortable win which sees them join Gibraltar United, Manchester 62, Europa, Lincoln & Lions into the quarter finals.
