St Joseph’s striker Diego Merchan grabbed two goals to help seal a 3-0 win over Glacis Utd, sending them to third place in the Premier Division table.
The first half started with St Joseph’s dominating possession but unable to break down a stubborn Glacis defence. Jamie Carlin was called into action early on making a great low save to keep out Javier Lopez’s shot. Few minutes later Diego Merchan had a great chance to give his side the lead but the striker opted to square the ball to Emerson Roque whose weak shot was cleared.
Midway through the half Jamie Carlin produced another fantastic save keeping out Ivan Lobato’s long range shot, Carlin was called into action just before half-time, saving Thyago Catharino’s free-kick. Referee Tim Reoch blew for half-time with the game square at 0-0.
Early in the second half Saints brought in Jose Luis Verdejo & Juan Carlos Polo who made an instant impact. Saints broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute, Glacis keeper Jamie Carlin failed to deal with a Saints corner, the ball fell to Diego Merchan who slotted his shot into an empty net.
Two minutes later, Polo skipped past two Glacis defenders, played the ball to Verdejo whose shot was saved by Carlin. Saints doubled their lead in the 81st minute, Polo’s through ball found Merchan who lobbed the on-rushing Carlin. Seven minutes later Glacis keeper Jamie Carlin handled the ball outside of his area and was awarded a yellow card, a decision which didn’t go down very well with the Saints management & fans.
St Joseph’s made it 3-0 in added time, Jose Luis Verdejo stepped up and curled his free-kick over the wall and into the top corner. Saints were able to see out the last few minutes and walk away with a comfortable 3-0 win.
This win sees St Joseph’s sit third while Glacis remain bottom of the Premier Division.
